In 1TB How Many GB?

I am planning to upgrade my storage drive and I'm a bit confused by the marketing labels versus what actually shows up in Windows. When calculating storage capacity for a new backup server, in 1tb how many gb should I expect to see as usable space once the drive is formatted?

One TB is technically 1,000GB (decimal) but binary math is used in computers, and therefore, 1TB is 1,024GB. Because of this marketing vs. reality disparity and overheads of the file system, Windows will usually report about 931GB of available space on a 1TB drive. It is not missing, it is calculated differently.

1 TB (terabyte) equals 1000 GB (gigabytes) in standard decimal measurement used by most storage devices. However, in binary calculation (used in operating systems), 1 TB equals 1024 GB. Both are correct, depending on the system used.
