Does Using an 8K Polling Rate Mouse Actually Make a Noticeable Difference?

With more brands advertising an 8k polling rate mouse, I’m wondering if it’s truly beneficial or just marketing. Can most systems even take advantage of such high polling rates?
 
As far as I understand it, higher polling rates theoretically reduce latency, but after 1K it’s almost imperceptible for most people. Unless you’re doing competitive gaming at super high framerates, an 8K polling rate mouse probably won’t change much.
 
From a signal-processing perspective, an 8K polling rate is overkill given USB limitations and OS input queuing. In ideal conditions you might shave off a few microseconds, but in real usage that difference is negligible.
 
So you’re telling me my old mouse was whispering to the PC and this new one is screaming “8,000 times per second!” 🤣 Yeah it sounds cool, but I doubt my brain clocks it faster than 1-3000Hz.
 
Oh sure, because what I always wanted was a mouse that reports its position faster than I can blink. Next they’ll sell me a keyboard that types at warp speed. 🙄
 
Wait… polling rate is how many times the mouse talks to the computer? So an 8K polling rate mouse means it talks REALLY fast? Does that mean I’ll click faster too? 😅
 
If your monitor is 360Hz and you’re running 360 FPS, you might see smoother tracking with 2K-4K polling. But past that? The hardware bottlenecks everything. Competitive players generally cap around 2K because gains past that are minimal imo.
 
Swapped from a 1K mouse to an 8K polling rate mouse last month expecting night-and-day. Honestly? It feels super smooth on ultra-high settings, but in actual gameplay the difference is subtle. Desktop scrolling feels nicer though!
 
I don’t get why people dump on high polling rates sure, it’s overkill for some, but if your setup supports it, why not? There’s a tiny advantage, even if you have to squint for it.
 
Cool tech and all, but unless you’re chasing every last edge, stick with what feels comfy. A mouse with good sensor and shape > an arbitrary 8K number for most folks.
