How do you quote someone in Discord — is there a built-in quote feature?

I want to reply to a specific message in Discord and make it clear what I'm responding to, but I can't find a proper quote button. Is there a way to quote in Discord using formatting, or do I need to use a workaround like the ">" markdown symbol? Does the reply feature count as quoting, or is it different from what most people mean?

Yes, Discord does allow quoting but it is quite basic. A single-line quote can be done by putting a > before the text. A multi-line quote can be done by >>> On a computer, you can simply highlight a message, right-click and copy it for quoting purposes. At present, Discord does not feature a special "quote reply" button as in some other chat apps however these markdown shortcuts are quite effective.

Discord does have a nifty inbuilt quoting tool. To quote someone use > before the quote for one line or >>> before the quote for multi-line quotes. If it is available, you can highlight a message and select “Quote”. It comes in handy for responding in a clear manner in dynamic conversations.

Yes Discord has a simple built-in way to quote messages. You can manually add a “>” before text for a single-line quote or “>>>” for a multi-line block quote, similar to Markdown formatting. On desktop, you can also highlight someone’s message and use the reply feature to directly reference it, which is often easier than traditional quoting. While Discord doesn’t have a dedicated classic “quote button” like some forums, replies and Markdown quotes work well for referencing messages clearly.

Discord doesn’t have a dedicated quote button like email apps, but you can quote messages using > before text.
Example:
> This is a quote

For multi-line quotes, use >>>. You can also reply directly with Discord’s built-in Reply feature to reference someone’s message visually.
