How Does an HDMI Switch Work?

I’m planning to use an HDMI switch to connect multiple devices to one screen. Does it affect video quality or cause input lag? What features should I look for when buying one? Any recommendations would help.

An HDMI switch is a small device that lets you connect multiple devices—like a gaming console, laptop, or streaming box—to a single TV or monitor through one HDMI port. Instead of constantly unplugging cables, the switch allows you to select which input you want to display. It works by routing the digital audio and video signal from the chosen device directly to the screen, either through a manual button or a remote control. Some advanced HDMI switches also automatically detect active devices and switch inputs for you, making them convenient and easy to use.
