How to lock cells in Excel

I’m working on a spreadsheet and want to prevent certain cells from being edited. I tried protecting the sheet but it’s confusing. Can someone explain how to lock cells in Excel step by step?

To lock cells in Microsoft Excel :
  1. Select cells → Right-click → Format Cells → Protection → Uncheck “Locked” (for editable cells)
  2. Go to Review → Protect Sheet
  3. Set a password (optional) → Click OK
Locked cells can’t be edited after protecting the sheet.
