How to password protect an Excel file?

I am looking for a clear guide on how to password protect an Excel file to secure sensitive data. I use Microsoft Excel regularly and want to prevent unauthorized access. Please explain the steps for both Windows and Mac versions if possible. Any best practices would also be helpful.

To password-protect an Excel file:
  • Open the file → File → Info → Protect Workbook → Encrypt with Password.
  • Enter a password, confirm it, and save the file.
Now, the file will require a password to open.

Open the Excel file, go to File > Info > Protect Workbook > Encrypt with Password, enter a strong password, and confirm it. Save the file. The workbook will now require the password to open and edit securely.

I’ve been doing this with Excel’s built-in “Protect Workbook” feature
just go to File → Info → Protect Workbook → Encrypt with Password. Super simple, and it locks the file instantly. Make sure you remember the password, because there’s no recovery.
