How to use alt keyboard on Mac?

I’m trying to use the alt keyboard on Mac but I’m confused about the key mappings. Some shortcuts don’t seem to work the same as Windows. How do I properly use it?

On a Mac, the Alt key is called the Option key.
To use it:
  • Type special characters: Hold Option (⌥)+ another key
    • Example: Option + 3 = £
    • Option + e, then e = é
  • Access hidden symbols: Try different Option combinations to see variations
  • Keyboard shortcuts: Option is used in many shortcuts (e.g., Option + Command + Esc to force quit apps)
