Is The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes Worth Reading Before the Movie?

I’m a huge fan of the original trilogy, but I haven't had the chance to pick up the prequel novel yet. Now that the film adaptation is out, I’m debating whether I should experience the story through the book first or just go see the movie. I’ve heard that the hunger games: the ballad of songbirds & snakes provides a lot of necessary backstories for President Snow and explains how the Games evolved into the spectacle seen in Katniss’s time. However, I’ve also heard the book is quite long and dense compared to the earlier entries. For those who have done both, do you think the cinematic version of the hunger games: the ballad of songbirds & snakes captures the nuances of Coriolanus’s descent into villainy, or is the internal monologue in the book essential?
