Is the Sony A7III still worth buying in 2025 for photography and video?

I’m considering the Sony A7III but not sure if it’s still a good option today. How does it hold up for low light, autofocus, and 4K shooting? Would you still recommend it, or are newer models better?

yes, the Sony A7 III still hits hard in 2025, if your main goal is photography (and occasional video). Its full frame 24 MP sensor still delivers excellent dynamic range, and in low light it performs amazingly well clean images up to ISO 6400 to 12800 (even 25600 with careful editing).
For most travel, portrait, street or event photography it’s still more than enough.

If you’re leaning into video, though A7 III feels a bit “dated” now. Yes, 4K is solid (oversampled from 6K, nice detail at 24/30p), but:
  • You’re stuck at 8‑bit 4:2:0 internally (less flexibility for color grading).
  • No 4K 60p or higher which newer cameras give you.
  • The non-flipping (just tilting) screen, and older menu system not ideal for vloggers or frequent handheld shooters.
So if video matters a lot, there are definitely better choices in 2025.

Don’t get me wrong: I just bought a “new old” A7 III body last month (second‑hand), and I’m happy. 😄
For me landscapes, night skies, candid portraits it’s a beast. Battery lasts long, noise is manageable, and I don’t overthink the 24 MP. For what I shoot, I don’t need 40 to 50 MP or fancy video codecs. It’s not “top of the line 2025,” but for price‑to‑performance, it’s hard to beat.

But yes if you want “future proof” features (especially newer video or high res work), know what you’re compromising.

Look I love the A7 III, but I’d avoid buying it new in 2025 unless you have a tight budget or very specific photography‑only needs. Modern rivals (including newer models from Sony) give better autofocus, more flexibility, better video specs, and more user‑friendly operation.
For example 10‑bit video, 4K 60p, flip/swivel screen, better ergonomics… these matter if you do a lot of video, client shoots, or plan to keep the camera for many years.
It’s almost like buying a mid‑range car from 2018 today it runs, it runs well, but new cars have better safety, convenience, and mileage.

Guys, both are right depends on what you want.
  • Want great photos, travel shots, portraits, low‑light party pics? A7 III go for it.
  • Want slick YouTube videos, cinematic footage, future‑proof gear maybe move on.
Me personally? I sold mine for a newer hybrid, but I still miss how simple, reliable and “just works” it was. Some days I think maybe I should keep a pair of them as backup bodies 😄
