Lenovo IdeaPad G50 Windows 10 laptop stalled at preparation of automatic repair

My Lenovo IdeaPad G50 (Windows 10 Home) is black booting to the black screen, which subsequently changes to Preparing Automatic Repair, and never continues; repeats itself after a long time. I have attempted to boot into Safe Mode by typing F8 (this does not work) and I used a Windows 10 USB installer to access Advanced Options - Startup Repair (this does not work) and used Command Prompt to access the installer to run chkdsk C: /f which stalled at 13 percent and I cancelled the command. I have not yet attempted a re-installation of windows since I have valuable files (photos/documents). Normal HDD noises (not SSD, it is an HDD) when using the laptop. Are there any recommendations as to the recovery of files prior to a re-install? Should it be attempted to bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /rebuildbcd?
