What’s the best malware protection for everyday browsing and downloads?

I’m looking into improving my malware protection because I download files occasionally and visit different websites for school and entertainment. I currently rely on the default Windows security, but I’m not sure if that’s enough. Has anyone here noticed a big difference after installing dedicated antivirus or anti-malware software? I’d like something lightweight that doesn’t slow down my system but still blocks suspicious downloads and phishing sites. Any real recommendations based on experience?

If you’re downloading a lot of random files for school or whatever, just grab the free version of Malwarebytes. I keep it installed but disabled, then just right-click and scan specific files before I open them. It’s the best "second opinion" tool out there without slowing your PC down.

For sure noticed a difference after ditching just stock Windows Security, it’s okay, but extra tools catch way more sketchy stuff. I run Malwarebytes + Bitdefender Free and it barely ever slows anything, yet blocks a lot more dodgy downloads/phishing sites than Windows alone did for me. Honestly even a lightweight secondary scanner + a good browser extension makes browsing way less stressful.
