I recently received a role change and want to know how to add promotion on linkedin correctly. Should the same job entry be updated or a new entry be made and what does a recruiter normally perceive when either option is used?

Hey! Well first of all congratulations on the promotion! That's a big win.

In the case of LinkedIn, you certainly do not want to display said growth and make your profile appear to be a chaotic puzzle. The thing is that promotions are actually preferred by the recruiters since it shows that you are a high performer that they would like to retain.

This is how you can do it in the most optimal way to make it look clean and professional.

The Golden Rule: Develop a New Entrance.
Do not simply update your previous job description! When you just swap an old post with "Junior Designer" to "Senior Designer" you have lost the story of what you have grown into.

Rather create a new post in the same company. When you do this well, LinkedIn will automatically nest them together, so that the company logo is seen once, and your various positions are presented beneath as a timeline. Such is the Gold Standard of the recruiters since they can observe your precise career path in just a glance.

1. Step by Step: How to do it
  1. Click on your profile and then scroll down to the Experience field.
  2. Click the+ button and choose Add position.
  3. The Essential bit: Enter the name of the company including how it is printed in your present position. It is available in the dropdown menu. This is what defines LinkedIn as grouping them together.
  4. Impute your new Job Title and the Start Date.
  5. Toggle "End current position": LinkedIn will tend to request whether you would like to terminate your former job as of today. Say Yes! This ensures that you stick to your schedule.
  6. Description: Do not copy and paste your previous responsibilities. Get down to business with your new duties and perhaps even a scramble of why (e.g. "Promoted to head up the regional unit after exceeding expectations on X project).
  7. Hit Save!
The Real Opinions of Recruiters.
  • The Edit Approach: When you simply edit the previous post, the recruiter may be made to believe that you had been a Senior of 3 years, and it may look weird or even a bit of an oddity when the recruiter conducts a background check.
  • The "New Entry" Approach: To them, there is an obvious line of: Have begun as X, have been crushed, have been promoted to Y. It is an indication of loyalty, reliability and skill development. Then there is one final pro tip as you are about to save, there will be a toggle with the option of Notify Network. * Enable it to have a bit of congratulations. news in everybody (it is great to get noticed!).
  • Switch it OFF when you are a work in silence type of a person or when you are in the initial stages of the transition and would rather keep it in the low profile in the first week or two.
Go get 'em! You earned that new title!
