YouTube playback speed not working — how do I fix it?

My YouTube playback speed is not working, and the videos stay at normal speed no matter what I select. I’ve refreshed the page and tried different browsers, but nothing changes. Has anyone fixed the YouTube playback speed not working issue before?

This usually happens when the video has copyrighted music or the uploader has restricted playback speed changes. But if it’s happening on every video, try clearing your browser cache + cookies. Also disable any extensions like adblockers, sponsorblock, or video-enhancers. One of those messed with my playback speed settings before.

Bro YouTube really behaves like “you’ll watch this at MY speed only.”
Jokes apart check if Hardware Acceleration is turned off/on in your browser. Switching that fixed it for me instantly. YouTube gets weird when the GPU doesn’t play nice.

You don’t need to reinstall your whole browser like some people are suggesting here.
This issue is usually caused by a glitch in your YouTube account settings.
Try signing out → change speed → sign back in.

Worked for me after days of frustration.

Nah man, that account trick didn’t do anything for me.
What actually fixed it was turning off “Stats for nerds” and a weird extension I forgot I installed. YouTube is sensitive as hell one wrong extension and everything breaks.

If you’re on mobile, check if “Stable Volume” or “Video Stabilizer” is turned on in the YouTube app experiments. It randomly forced my speed back to normal.
If you're on PC, try opening YouTube in an incognito window. If speed works there, it’s 100% an extension messing with you.

1. On a video's watch page, select Settings .
2. Select Speed.
3. Select the speed at which you'd like the video to play.
