A Communication Error Has Occurred in Monster Hunter Wilds What Should I Do?

I’m running into a communication error in Monster Hunter Wilds, which stops me from connecting online. Has anyone figured out how to fix this? Are there network settings or game updates I need to check?

I was in the same boat yesterday! For me, it turned out to be a NAT issue. I saw “communication error” every time I tried to join SOS flares. Switched my PS5/Xbox to Open NAT (Type 1/Type A) and it stopped instantly. If you’re on a router with strict NAT, port forwarding for the game helped too (look up the Wilds port list). Worth checking!

You definitely want to confirm your NAT type first it’s the #1 culprit for “communication error” messages in most online games.
Even if other games work (like shooters), Monster Hunter is picky with peer matchmaking.
In your router settings:
  • Enable UPnP
  • OR manually forward ports for Monster Hunter Wilds
If you don’t know how to do that, tell us your router model and we can guide you.

Also check updates! Capcom has pushed hotfixes that change how servers authenticate players because of DDoS protection and regional throttling.
I had this error for 2 days until the game auto‑updated and then I could connect normally.
Make sure:
✔ Game version is latest
✔ System firmware (PS / Xbox / Switch) is up to date
Sometimes consoles block old versions from connecting online.

Quick question what platform are you on?
I’m on Switch and I get the “communication error” intermittently even with good Wi‑Fi, but my friend on PS5 doesn’t. Could it be platform‑specific network issues?
Curious what others have seen.

If you’re on Wi‑Fi, try Ethernet.
I had perfect speeds but constant “communication error” in Wilds until I plugged in a LAN cable.
Not always practical for everyone, but it did make a huge difference. Wi‑Fi interference can still mess with persistent game sessions.

Don’t overlook your firewall/antivirus either especially on PC.
Had this exact error on Steam, fixed it by allowing:
  • Monster Hunter Wilds EXE through firewall
  • UDP traffic in/out
After that, no more communication drops. Worth checking if you’re on Windows.

One more tip: if you’re trying to join friends specifically and it fails, double‑check:
📌 Everyone is on the same game version
📌 Same region settings
📌 No party invites pending
Sometimes the error isn’t network but mismatched game builds.

Summary of what works for most:
  • Update game + console
  • Check NAT - aim for Open
  • Enable UPnP / port forward
  • Wired network > Wi‑Fi
  • Firewall exceptions on PC
Hope one of these helps you get past that annoying “communication error” and into some hunts! 🐲🗡️
