I have an older Chromebook and I’m wondering how well acer c720 windows 10 performs in 2025. Is it usable for basic tasks like browsing and documents, or does the hardware struggle with updates and drivers?

With the 4GB RAM model, it can surprisingly be used on light tasks. Even the CPU is not the largest bottleneck, but the small 16GB SSD. The size of windows 10 is nearly 12GB on a clean install and you have practically zero space to update. You will certainly be glad to replace with a bigger M.2 2242 drive first. After that and when you install the CoolStar drivers, it makes a fine little beater laptop to go to coffee shops.

The simple fact that you are able to do something, does not mean that you should. You are attempting to fit a truck motor in a lawn-mower. You can go out and purchase a larger SSD and waste four hours configuring UEFI firmware by the time you can afford to purchase an older ThinkPad on eBay at $100 and get a keyboard with keys that are designed to be human compatible.
In fact, it is even more of a performance than you would have guessed due to the fact that that Celeron is designed on the Haswell architecture which proves to even be a better performer than the newer Atom based Celerons. Install a Windows 10 (such as Tiny10) that is debloated and turn off transparency effects. It will not be the monster, but in the case of Google Docs and 720p in YouTube, it is as smooth as silk.
RIP your battery life. ChromeOS is essentially a browser that is kept alive and that is why the C720 was able to last 8 hours. An average Windows 10 system will consist of approximately 50 background processes. Project that battery to go down to about 3 hours maximum. It's a "tethered" laptop now.
In case you encounter any problems of a black screen during the install, it must probably be the hardware acceleration in the installer. And the keyboard remapper also should not be forgotten! Chromebooks are missing the windows key or the F-key so you will be miserable without the custom driver that remaps the search key to the start menu.

Why Windows? To go smooth in 2026 on 10-year-old software, all you need to do is install Lubuntu or ChromeOS Flex. Windows 10 exits end-of-support at the end of 2025 in any case, so you are installing a security sieve of an operating system. Linux will not charge you Windows Bloatware Tax to provide you with a modern browser.

I did this last week! The Chrultrabook community trackpad drivers are in fact better than the original ChromeOS ones. All you have to do is to take care of the MrChromebox firmware utility steps strictly. You will have a bad time should you accidently remove the firmware write-protect screw.

"Smoothly" is a strong word. It is closer to the truth of it being working provided you are a patient as patient as a Zen monk. Waiting that the CPU is pegged at 100% in a solid five seconds when opening a heavy site such as the Reddit or Facebook. Well, just in case, you want that. Otherwise, it can serve as a dedicated Spotify station or a digital picture frame.
Do not forget that Windows 10 will get support until October 2025. Now its 2026 They dont support anymore bruh You want Windows 11 hacks to bypass the TPM requirements, but that Celeron will certainly boil in blood with Win11 unless you are paying the Extended Security Updates.
Ensuring you have the right drivers to the Crostini/ CoolStar audio is important. It has an odd Intel SST sound system that windows dislikes inherently. Unless the particular community driver is obtained, then you will be left with Bluetooth headphones since the internal speakers will be as inanimate as stone.
