I found an old PC setup with geforce 7600gs intel 915 chipset and was wondering if it’s still usable today. Are there any supported operating systems or lightweight apps that run well on this hardware?
Yes, it’s usable but only for very basic tasks. Lightweight Linux distros like Lubuntu, antiX, or Puppy Linux can run decently. Don’t expect modern browsers to feel smooth though.
The Intel 915 chipset and GeForce 7600GS are limited to legacy drivers. Modern Windows versions are not officially supported. Linux with open-source drivers is your best option.
I revived a similar system last year. antiX Linux worked surprisingly well for file management and light browsing. Firefox was painful, but LibreOffice was okay.
The hardware lacks modern instruction sets and GPU acceleration support. It’s fine for terminal work, legacy applications, or embedded-style usage but not daily modern computing.
