Can Windows XP Still Run Properly on Systems Using the Intel 865G Chipset?

I’m experimenting with legacy hardware and wondering how stable windows xp intel 865g chipset setups are today. Are drivers still available, and what limitations should I expect?

Yes, Windows XP actually runs very well on the Intel 865G chipset. It was designed for that era, so driver support is still floating around on archive sites. Expect smooth performance for basic tasks, but don’t expect modern software compatibility.

Stability-wise, XP on 865G is solid. Intel officially supported XP drivers for chipset, graphics, LAN, and audio. The main limitation is lack of SSE2 optimization and very limited RAM addressing compared to modern systems.

I ran this exact combo a few years ago for retro gaming. XP booted fast, drivers installed cleanly, and older games worked perfectly. Internet browsing was the biggest pain due to outdated browser support.

It’ll run Windows XP like it’s 2004 again 😄 Just don’t try opening modern websites unless you enjoy watching your PC think about life for five minutes.

Stable? Absolutely. Secure? Not even close. If you plan to connect it to the internet, XP will basically be screaming “hack me” the entire time.

Are you planning offline use only? Because for legacy apps or old games, this combo is actually great. Online use is where things fall apart quickly.

If you’re just learning about older PCs, this is a good setup to experiment with. XP feels snappy on 865G compared to modern bloated operating systems.

Intel 865G was one of the most mature chipsets of its time. XP driver support is complete, but you’re limited to DirectX 9-era graphics, IDE storage, and no modern security updates.

It works, sure, but “properly” depends on expectations. As a nostalgia or testing machine, it’s fine. As a daily-use PC in 2025? That’s pushing it.
