How Does AO3 Work and Is It Safe to Use Regularly?

I recently started reading fanfiction and found ao3, but I’m still learning how everything works. Is ao3 completely free, and are there any risks I should know about before creating an account? I’d appreciate guidance from someone who uses ao3 frequently.

The tagging system is the best part but also the most overwhelming. Pro tip: use the "Exclude" filters on the side if there are specific tropes or pairings you don't want to see. It saves you from scrolling through stuff you hate.

AO3 (Archive of Our Own) is a non-profit, fan-run library for fan fiction and art. It operates on a tagging system, allowing users to filter stories by character, trope, or maturity.

It is technically safe and ad-free, though its "no censorship" policy means you must use filters to avoid unwanted content.

Archive of Our Own (AO3) is a non-profit, fan-run repository for transformative works. It uses a tagging system to help users filter content. It is generally safe; the site is ad-free and open-source, but because it is uncensored, you must use those tags to avoid content you dislike
