How long will a MacBook last on average?

I’m planning to buy a MacBook and wondering how long will a MacBook last with regular use. What factors affect its lifespan? Is it worth the investment long term? Would love some insights.

A MacBook typically lasts 5–8 years on average, depending on usage and care. Hardware like batteries may need replacement after 3–5 years, while software updates from Apple usually support devices for around 6–7 years. Proper maintenance, storage, and light workloads can extend lifespan, while heavy use may shorten it.

MacBook usually last for 5 to 8 years on average however many well-maintained models might be usable for 7 to 10 years depending on the frequency of usage, upgrades, and software support. Light users often end up getting more life from the device than the professionals who are running heavy apps. Apple normally supports Macs with macOS and security updates for a few years, which decides the working life of the device in practical terms. MacBook batteries are made to last for about 1,000 charge cycles before there will be a noticeable loss in capacity. Some of the signs that it may be time to change are slower performance, the battery not lasting as long, the device getting hot quickly, or problems arising when using a newer software.
