I’m getting Error Code 0x800F0805 while trying to install Windows updates. The process fails midway every time. I’ve run the Update Troubleshooter and DISM commands, but it keeps returning the same error. Does anyone know an effective way to resolve this permanently?

The error code 0x800F0805 in windows 10 typically happens when updating the system or when it is being installed with the .NET Framework. To troubleshoot it, use the Windows Update Troubleshooter to troubleshoot and fix most common problems. Next, open Command Prompt (as an administrator) and type the following; DISM / Online / Cleanup-Image / RestoreHealth and then sfc / scannow. These utilities will reconstruct damaged files in the system. At last, reboot your computer and also reinstall the update.

Fix Error Code 0x800F0805 in Windows 10:
  1. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter.
  2. Reset update components via Command Prompt.
  3. Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and sfc /scannow.
  4. Manually install updates if needed.

I had the exact same issue a few weeks ago. What worked for me was manually downloading the problematic update from the Microsoft Update Catalog and installing it offline. Sometimes Windows Update gets stuck on a specific patch, and installing it manually bypasses the error. Also, make sure your system drive has enough free space.

Ah yes, the infamous 0x800F0805… Windows updates are basically a game of “roll the dice and hope it works.” 😂 I ended up just letting it sit for hours, and then it magically installed after a couple of reboots. Not super helpful, but sometimes patience actually works!

Honestly, I don’t get why everyone jumps straight to DISM and troubleshooters. Those only fix symptoms, not the root cause. The real fix is cleaning up the SoftwareDistribution folder and resetting the Windows Update components. I did that, and updates installed perfectly after.

Try this if you haven’t already:
  1. Open Command Prompt as admin
  2. Run net stop wuauserv and net stop bits
  3. Navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete its contents
  4. Restart the services with net start wuauserv and net start bits
  5. Reboot and try updating again
It worked for me on two laptops. Fingers crossed!

I feel your pain. I spent an entire weekend trying to fix Error Code 0x800F0805. At one point, I almost formatted my PC… and no, DISM alone won’t always cut it. If nothing else works, a repair install with the Windows 10 media tool is a lifesaver. It keeps your files but fixes corrupted system files.
