How to retrieve deleted messages on Messenger app in 2025?

Permanently deleted Messenger messages generally can’t be recovered, but you can try checking Archived Chats, downloading your Facebook data via “Download Your Information” (within ~90 days of deletion), or asking the other person to resend the chat.

  • Facebook lets you archive chats, hiding them from the main inbox without deleting.
  • How to check:
    • In the Messenger app (iOS/Android): Tap your profile → Archived Chats.
    • On desktop: Messenger.com → See All in MessengerMoreArchived.
    • If your chat's there, tap and unarchive it.
  • Best for: Chats you archived by mistake rather than deleted

Facebook lets you request a data archive including past messages:

  • Go to Facebook account settings → Your Facebook InformationDownload Your Information.
  • Select Messages, choose a date range, and request the archive.
  • You’ll get a ZIP file containing your messages (as HTML or JSON).

You can’t recover fully deleted or “unsent” messages, but you might retrieve them through these methods: check if the conversation was archived (these stay hidden, not deleted); download your Facebook data (includes messages up to the last sync); ask the other person to forward or screenshot the chat; or — on Android — dig into the app’s cache (com.facebook.orca/fb_temp) to restore local data Third-party tools claim to help, but results aren’t guaranteed and may risk privacy.

Messages permanently deleted in Messenger are usually unrecoverable, although you may be able to look in Archived Chats, request a copy of your Facebook information via the “Download Your Information” tool (this window will remain open ~90 days after the message is deleted) or request the other person to forward the chat to you.
