How to turn ringer off on macbook?

My MacBook keeps making notification sounds and I want to turn them off. How can I disable the ringer or alerts easily?

I found the solution to turning off the ringer on my MacBook by going to System Preferences, then Sound, and unchecking the box next to 'Play a sound when a message is received'. Also, I had to disable notifications for the Messages app in System Preferences under Notifications & Focus. This completely silenced the sound and only shows a notification icon in the corner of the screen.

Oh yeah that can get annoying just click the control center on the top right and turn on Do Not Disturb, or go to System Settings > Notifications and mute them from there
