I built mine around the ASUS X870 Max Gaming WiFi7 and a 9800X3D, and it’s been really solid. Board has PCIe 5.0, Wi-Fi 7, USB4, and strong DDR5 support, so it’s pretty future-proof for gaming and general use. Runs high-end GPUs and fast storage just fine. You’ll get loads of USB and networking options out of the box too.
Only thing to note is that it is a bit pricey compared to mid-range X670/B850 boards, but if you want the extra features and connectivity it’s a nice platform for a long-term high-end build.

For me it was worth it because I don’t plan to upgrade again for a while. Wi-Fi 7 + DDR5 up to 8000+ speeds means it’s ready for newer tech later, and AMD AM5 support should last for years.
9800X3D pairs nicely with it so far no bottlenecks in games, and responsiveness feels very good. Just make sure your RAM and BIOS are all supported/updated since AM5 boards tend to be picky the first time you boot. (That’s general AM5 advice, not just ASUS.)

I had the same combo in mind ASUS X870 Max + 9800X3D and personally yeah, if you’re building a high-end gaming rig it feels right. The board is loaded with features: Wi-Fi 7 for super solid wireless, multiple M.2 slots, USB4 ports, and it handles big DDR5 sticks easily.
A lot of people also like the ASUS ROG Strix X870 boards if you want something slightly more premium or with extra bells and whistles, but the Max is great value for what it offers.

Gaming with this combo has been excellent so far. 9800X3D is a beast for games, especially CPU-bound ones, and the X870 board doesn’t hold it back. You’ll just need a good GPU and fast DDR5 RAM.
Load times, stability, and peak FPS have been smooth, and I love having Wi-Fi 7 too latency has been solid even with a busy home network. Worth it if you want a top-tier AMD build in 2025.

I went with the X870 Max Gaming WiFi7 for my Ryzen 9800X3D and I’m happy with it great power delivery, cooling, lots of ports (USB4, fast LAN + Wi-Fi 7), and DDR5 support up to high speeds.
It does cost more than a simple B650/B850 board, but if you want the extra bandwidth and future-proof connectivity, it’s a nice choice. If you’re on a tighter budget, there are cheaper boards that still run the 9800X3D well but this setup definitely feels premium.
