I’m getting an i/o device error when trying to access my external hard drive. I’m not sure why the i/o device error occurs or how to fix i/o device error without losing data.

I've been experiencing issues with my external hard drive lately, and I think I finally figured out the cause of the 'I/O device error'. It seems to be related to the drive's physical connection, in my case it was a loose SATA cable. Checking the connections and reseating the drive resolved the issue for me, so I'd recommend trying that first if you're encountering similar problems.

An I/O device error on an external drive is usually caused by connection issues (faulty USB cable/port), corrupted drivers, file system errors, or physical damage to the drive.

An I/O device error on external drives happens when your system can’t read or write data properly.

Common causes:

  • Loose or faulty cables/ports
  • Corrupted or damaged drive sectors
  • Outdated or corrupted drivers
  • File system errors (like improper ejection)
  • Hardware failure of the external drive

An I/O device error on external drives is usually caused by faulty cables, damaged USB ports, corrupted drivers, bad sectors on the drive, file system corruption, or insufficient power supply. It can also occur due to improper ejection or hardware failure.
