I’ve been experiencing a computer screen shadow problem where faint duplicate images or shadows appear on the display. What usually causes this issue—hardware or software? Are there any simple fixes I can try before replacing the screen?

Screen shadow or “ghosting” usually happens due to either a display setting issue, outdated graphics drivers, or a hardware problem like a failing monitor panel or loose cable; I’ve seen it happen after enabling things like motion smoothing or incorrect refresh rates, too. First, try updating your GPU drivers, setting the correct resolution and refresh rate, and turning off any weird display enhancements in settings. Also, check or replace your HDMI/Display cable and try another port. If the shadow is still there even on BIOS or another device, then it’s likely the monitor itself is going bad, and replacing it is the only real fix.

Problems with screen shadows can be attributed to image retention, backlighting, cable connection, incorrect resolution or outdated graphic drivers. Possible solutions include rebooting, making sure of a good connection, installing updated drivers, changing screen resolution, performing a pixel refresh or buying a new monitor when hardware fails.

The computer screen shadow problem is usually caused by display settings issues, outdated graphics drivers, or a faulty monitor or cable. You can try fixing it by updating the graphics driver, adjusting screen resolution, checking the display cable, or restarting the computer.
