What is Internet Packet Exchange?

I want to know what Internet Packet Exchange means in a simple way.
IPX is a network-layer protocol used for routing data packets across a network. It functions similarly to the Internet Protocol (IP) in the TCP/IP suite but was used in local area networks (LANs), particularly in Novell NetWare environments. Also, it was developed by Novell in the 1980s. Now it is no longer used because TCP/IP has taken its place.
