I am putting together a budget-friendly workstation for some legacy software testing and I’m looking at these two specific processors. When comparing the amd fx 9550 vs amd fx 8350, is the slight increase in clock speed on the 9000-series worth the significantly higher TDP, or am I better off overclocking the 8350 to save on cooling costs? I’d love to hear from anyone who still runs these AM3+ chips in a daily driver setup.

The FX-8350, hands down. The 9590 is a literal space heater. You’ll spend more on the cooling setup and a nuclear-grade power supply than you did on the actual workstation.

Between the two AMD FX CPUs, the  AMD FX-8350 has better thermal management simply because it produces far less heat. Its TDP is 125 W, much lower than the 220 W of the FX-9590, meaning it runs cooler and needs less aggressive cooling. The FX-9590 runs significantly hotter and demands high-end cooling to stay stable.
