I keep running into err_connection_reset on multiple websites and pages refuse to load. What usually causes this issue, and what are the most effective fixes for it on Windows or Chrome?
This error basically means your browser tried to connect but something in between cut the connection. On Windows/Chrome it’s usually caused by: bad DNS, VPN messing up traffic, corrupted Chrome profile, or your ISP blocking/rerouting something.
What fixes it for most people:
Reset TCP/IP using netsh int ip reset
Change DNS to 8.8.8.8
Disable any VPN/Proxy
Clear Chrome’s cache
I’d start with DNS though that fixes it like 70% of the time.
Bro, check your antivirus/firewall. I swear these third-party antiviruses act like they own your PC. Once mine blocked half the internet because it “felt suspicious.”
If you're using Avast, AVG, Kaspersky, anything like that… disable shields for a minute and reload the page.
If it loads, uninstall that thing ASAP. Windows Defender is enough.
Not always antivirus lol. People love blaming security apps but 90% of the time Chrome’s own settings are broken.
OP, try this:
Go to chrome://settings/reset → “Restore settings to original defaults.”
Restart Chrome.
It won’t delete bookmarks, just resets configs. Fixed it for me instantly.
Weirdly enough, I ONLY get this error when I turn off my VPN. My ISP throttles random sites at peak hours and causes resets. When VPN is on, everything loads fine.
So if you’re using crappy local ISP (like I used to), try switching DNS + keeping VPN on for a few minutes.
Sometimes the ISP is the real villain here.
dk why everyone is giving long tutorials. This happened to me because my WiFi router was dying slowly like an overworked government employee.
A reboot fixed it… until it finally gave up a week later.
So yeah, before you reset the whole internet, try turning the router off → count to 10 → turn it back on.
(And if that works, congratulations, your router is 95% broken )
ERR_CONNECTION_RESET means your browser couldn’t establish a stable connection because something interrupted it—often network issues, VPN/proxy problems, faulty browser settings, or server-side resets. Fix it by restarting your router, disabling VPN/proxy, clearing browser cache, flushing DNS, checking firewall settings, or trying another network or browser.
ERR_CONNECTION_RESET happens when the connection between your browser and a website is unexpectedly cut off. Common causes include unstable internet, misconfigured network settings, blocked traffic, or overloaded servers. Restart your modem, disable VPN/proxy, clear cache, reset TCP/IP, or check firewalls to restore a stable connection.
ERR_CONNECTION_RESET error appears when your browser tries to reach a site, but the connection is forcibly reset. It can stem from DNS issues, corrupted cookies, antivirus interference, or server outages. Fix it by rebooting your router, flushing DNS, disabling security tools temporarily, or testing the site on another device.
ERR_CONNECTION_RESET means the website’s connection was dropped before loading. Causes include weak Wi-Fi, incorrect network configurations, browser corruption, or server-side blocks. Solutions: refresh the page, restart network equipment, remove VPN/proxy settings, clear browsing data, reset network adapters, or try using mobile data to isolate the issue.
This error essentially indicates that your browser attempted to establish a connection but was interrupted by an intermediary. On Windows and Chrome, the most common causes are: a corrupted Chrome profile, a VPN interfering with traffic, a faulty DNS, or your ISP banning or rerouting something.
What most people find to be the solution:
Use netsh int ip reset to reset TCP/IP.
8.8.8.8 is the new DNS.
Disable all VPNs and proxies and empty Chrome's cache.
However, DNS fixes it about 70% of the time, so I'd start there.
It is made by disrupted network communication, and therefore re-setting your router, switching off VPN/proxy, emptying the browsers, and draining the DNS will normally remove the abrupt cessation of connections.
