Why Does Minecraft Show a Getsockopt Error During Multiplayer?

I’m unable to join servers and keep receiving a getsockopt error minecraft message. Is this related to firewall settings, network configuration, or server-side problems?

I've run into this before. In my instance, it was my firewall that blocked the ports that Minecraft used. You may also try to turn off your firewall or make an exception of Minecraft. In other cases, Windows defender firewall fails to automatically permit Java to interact with the network.

Also have a check of whether your router is not blocking outgoing connections. Other routers or ISPs have severe NAT configuration. I resolved it through configuring my router options to allow UPnP to allow Minecraft to do the port mapping automatically.

To further complicate matters: when you are on a VPN then that can also cause a getsockopt error. Minecraft is occasionally not happy with VPN connections due to the fluctuation of the IP or VPN blocking ports.

The same issue happened to me not so long ago and was, in fact, server-side. Others had the outdated version of Minecraft or incorrectly configured networking. See whether you are able to join other servers. Yes, then it is probably the server, and not your computer.

A technicaler point of view: getsockopt is Java/Windows system call, which is concerned with network sockets. Failure of which normally implies that the connection cannot be made, or sustained. That is more of network problems rather than the game itself.

You may wish to attempt to clear your DNS. This will be done by opening Command Prompt as Administrator and typing ipconfig /flushdns after which Minecraft will be restarted. It assisted me in the case of strange connection failures, such as getsockopt.

Check Java as well. It is a heavy dependency of Minecraft. In case your Java version is corrupted or old then it will cause network errors. These errors are sometimes corrected by reinstalling the recent Java run time environment.

Another thing: antivirus programs have the ability to block network traffic of Minecraft in silence. Attempt to add an exception of Java/ Minecraft to your antivirus. I spent hours debugging and found out that Norton was the cause of all that.

In case of everything, seek to change your internet connection. This was the mistake that I had once on my home Wi-Fi but it worked on a mobile hotspot. That proved that my ISP was crippling or blocking certain ports.

Finally, update your Minecraft. Older versions may also produce getsockopt errors on the servers with newer versions. Always make certain you check compatibility to the version of the server you desire to join.
