Why is Antimalware Service Executable high CPU and how do I fix it?

I keep facing antimalware service executable high cpu usage on Windows. What causes it, and what are safe methods to reduce the CPU load?

Honestly, this happens because Windows Defender (which runs Antimalware Service Executable) is constantly scanning your files in real-time. If you have a lot of programs or files, it can spike your CPU usage. One safe way to reduce the load is to schedule scans for times when you’re not using your PC. Also, make sure your Windows is up to date sometimes updates optimize this process.

I used to get 80 to 90% CPU spikes every few minutes because of this. What worked for me was excluding certain folders from real-time scanning (like game folders). Just go to Windows Security → Virus & Threat Protection → Manage Settings → Exclusions. Be careful not to exclude system folders though, obviously.

Man, every time this thing hits 100% CPU, my laptop sounds like it’s about to take off like a jet. 😂 I just wait it out usually. But seriously, scheduling scans and making a few exclusions really helps. Also, don’t run heavy apps right when a Defender scan starts. Learned that the hard way…

I’m not disabling it, just limiting it a bit. Real-time protection plus a huge game library = meltdown. You gotta be practical.

Another reason this spikes is if you have third-party antivirus installed alongside Windows Defender. Conflicts can cause high CPU usage. Either stick to one antivirus or tweak Defender settings. Also, check your system for malware sometimes real infections trigger constant scanning.
