Is There a Simple Way to Learn How to Change Mouse Polling Rate on Windows or macOS?

I recently bought a new mouse and want to know how to change mouse polling rate properly. Does this require special software, or can it be adjusted through system settings?

Most of the time, you’ll need the mouse brand’s software to change the polling rate. Windows and macOS don’t really expose that setting directly. Once you install it, it’s usually a simple dropdown option.

Polling rate is firmware-level for most mice. The OS just reads input; it doesn’t control how often the mouse sends data. That’s why vendor software or onboard mouse memory is required.

I had the same question last month 😅 Turns out my mouse couldn’t even change polling rate without installing the app. I thought it was a Windows setting too.

I use 1000Hz on Windows for gaming, but on macOS I honestly don’t notice much difference. macOS feels like it smooths things out anyway.

If your mouse supports onboard profiles, you can change the polling rate once on Windows, save it to the mouse, and then use it on macOS without software running.

Unless you’re gaming competitively, changing polling rate probably won’t matter much. Higher isn’t always better and can slightly increase CPU usage.
