What Are the Correct Steps for How to Connect Keyboard to iPad?

I’m trying to figure out how to connect keyboard to iPad, but I’m confused between Bluetooth, Smart Connector, and third-party keyboards. Are there specific settings I need to enable, and do all keyboards support iPadOS features equally well?

If it’s a Bluetooth keyboard, go to Settings → Bluetooth, turn it on, and put the keyboard in pairing mode. For Smart Connector keyboards, you literally just attach it and it works instantly. No extra settings needed. Most basic typing works on all keyboards, but iPadOS shortcuts are better on Apple or higher-end third-party ones.

Smart Connector keyboards don’t require Bluetooth or charging because they draw power directly from the iPad. Bluetooth keyboards rely on standard HID profiles, so functionality can vary. Modifier keys, trackpad gestures, and system shortcuts are best supported on keyboards designed specifically for iPadOS rather than generic ones.

I had the same confusion honestly. I bought a Bluetooth keyboard and thought it was broken because nothing happened. Turns out you have to hold the pairing button first 😅 After that, it showed up instantly on my iPad.

Step one: turn on Bluetooth.
Step two: panic when nothing shows up.
Step three: realize the keyboard has been dead for three months.
Step four: replace batteries and suddenly you’re a tech genius again.

I’ve used Apple’s Magic Keyboard and a cheap Amazon Bluetooth one. Both connect easily, but the Magic Keyboard feels way smoother with shortcuts and the trackpad. The cheaper one works fine for typing, just don’t expect laptop-level behavior.

Apple: “Just attach it, it works.”
Third-party keyboard: “First, sacrifice 10 minutes to Bluetooth settings and pray it stays connected.”
Jokes aside, Bluetooth works fine once paired.

People overthink this way too much. Any Bluetooth keyboard works. You don’t need Apple’s expensive keyboard unless you want trackpad gestures and perfect shortcut support. Typing is typing.

I just keep a small Bluetooth keyboard in my bag. Pair once, and it reconnects automatically every time. iPadOS keyboard shortcuts are a bonus, not a requirement, at least for casual use.

If you want full iPadOS integration Spotlight shortcuts, multitasking keys, and reliable trackpad gestures choose a keyboard explicitly labeled as iPad-compatible. Generic keyboards are fine, but modifier key mapping and consistency can be hit or miss depending on the brand.
