Why does Kleopatra say disabled OpenGP?

I’m getting an error where Kleopatra shows disabled OpenGP, and I’m not sure what it means. I was trying to manage encryption keys but got stuck. How can I fix or enable it?

Kleopatra shows “OpenPGP disabled” when the GnuPG (gpg) backend isn’t installed, not detected, or misconfigured so the app can’t enable OpenPGP features.

Kleopatra may show “OpenPGP disabled” when the OpenPGP backend (GnuPG component) isn’t properly installed, configured, or detected. This can happen if GnuPG is missing, outdated, or misconfigured. Enabling OpenPGP support or reinstalling GnuPG usually resolves the issue and restores functionality.

If Kleopatra says “OpenPGP disabled,” it might be because the OpenPGP engine failed to load. This can occur when GnuPG is corrupted or incompatible with your system. Updating both programs often resolves the problem quickly and restores encryption features.

“OpenPGP disabled” in Kleopatra can appear when configuration files are missing or incorrect. It relies on GnuPG to function. Resetting configuration settings or reinstalling GnuPG usually enables OpenPGP again and allows normal encryption and key management operations.

If Kleopatra shows OpenPGP disabled, it usually means the underlying GnuPG is missing, outdated, or not configured correctly. Since Kleopatra depends on GnuPG to handle encryption, any issue with it can disable OpenPGP. Reinstalling or updating GnuPG (or the full Gpg4win package) and restarting Kleopatra typically fixes the problem.
